What Are Types Of Metal Coatings And Their Applications?

A metal coating is any process that puts a layer of metal onto a surface. The types differ in how that metal arrives: as a liquid, as a dry powder, as a molten spray, or as an electrochemical deposit. Each one answers a different question, and each one has its own applications, its own compatible surfaces and its own limits.

VeroMetal® makes liquid metal coating: real metal particles suspended in a liquid binder, applied with a trowel, spray or spatula. Once cured and polished it resembles solid metal, because it is metal. That is the difference between a coating chosen for protection and a coating chosen for the surface itself.

Overview

Overview Of Common Metal Coating Types

Five types cover most of the market. Each is listed with what it is best for and what it can and cannot do.

  • 1. Liquid metal coatingA real metal coating suspended in a liquid binder, applied with a trowel, spray or spatula. Once cured and polished, it resembles solid metal. Best for interior and exterior design, furniture, architecture and branding. Compatible surfaces: wood, MDF, stone, composites. Available finishes: bronze, brass, copper, tin, iron and more.
  • 2. Powder coatingA dry powder applied electrostatically, then baked onto a surface. Offers durability and is widely used in industrial and consumer applications. Best for metal objects, outdoor furniture and machinery. Appearance: a smooth, coloured finish, not a real metal texture. Limitations: it lacks the tactile metal look and is limited to certain surfaces.
  • 3. Metalizing, thermal spray coatingA process where molten metal is sprayed onto a surface to build up a protective layer. Best for large scale structures, bridges, marine steel and industrial use. Common metals: zinc, aluminium, stainless steel. Advantages: strong corrosion resistance, functional rather than decorative.
  • 4. ElectroplatingA chemical process that deposits a metal layer on another metal object using electricity. Best for jewelry, electronics and small components. Metals used: gold, silver, nickel, chrome. Challenges: it involves chemicals and offers limited flexibility for large surfaces.
  • 5. Spray metal coatingLiquid or powder metal sprayed onto a surface to create a real metal layer. This method can be used for both functional and decorative purposes. Best for signage, decor and architectural elements. Finish: depends on the binder and the application method.
The Process

How A Liquid Metal Coating Is Applied

A liquid metal coating is applied cold, without heat, casting or foundry equipment. Three steps take it from a wet mixture to a genuine metal surface.

01

Mix

Real metal particles are combined with a binder to form a cold, workable liquid metal in the chosen alloy.

02

Apply

The liquid is applied to a prepared substrate by trowel, spatula, brush, roller or spray, building a layer of only 120 to 150 microns.

03

Cure and finish

Once cured, the surface is sanded, polished and, if desired, patinated or sealed to reach its final character.

Finishes

Which Metals Are Available As A Coating?

A VeroMetal® liquid metal coating is produced in a wide range of genuine metals, each available in multiple surface treatments and patina states. Base metals can also be mixed to tune a finish to a design.

The Principle

Real metal where solid metal cannot go. A liquid metal coating brings the weight, depth and patina of genuine metal to surfaces that could never carry solid sheet.

Comparison

Types Of Metal Coatings vs Solid Sheet Metal

Both a liquid metal coating and solid sheet metal deliver a genuine metal surface. The difference is weight, freedom of form and where each can realistically be used.

Metal Coating

VeroMetal liquid metal
  • Approximately 0.5 kg/m², applied at 120 to 150 microns.
  • Bonds to wood, MDF, stone, composites, plaster, concrete, glass and metal.
  • Follows curves, edges and detailed forms without joints.
  • Applied on-site or in workshop, on new or existing surfaces.
  • Real metal that can be sanded, polished, patinated and aged.

Solid Sheet Metal

Traditional cladding
  • Many times heavier than a coating for a comparable surface.
  • Requires fixings, sub-structure and load-bearing support.
  • Curves and complex forms need fabrication and welding.
  • Heavy panels are difficult on lightweight or existing substrates.
  • Real metal, but constrained by weight and installation.

Which Surfaces Are Compatible?

Compatible surfaces are the real dividing line between coating types. Powder coating and electroplating need a metal object to begin with. Metalizing is aimed at large steel structures. A liquid metal coating is applied as a thin layer, so it bonds to almost any prepared substrate.

  • Boards and timberWood, MDF, plywood, furniture and cabinetry.
  • Mineral surfacesStone, plaster, concrete, cement board and architectural walls.
  • Composites and glassComposites, plastic, polyester, panels and glass elements.
  • Existing metal and structuresRenovation of existing metalwork, doors, columns and facades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Types Of Metal Coatings: Common Questions

What are the main types of metal coatings?

The most common types are liquid metal coating, powder coating, thermal spray coating or metalizing, electroplating and spray metal coating. Liquid metal coating is a real metal coating suspended in a liquid binder, applied with a trowel, spray or spatula, and once cured and polished it resembles solid metal. Powder coating is a dry powder applied electrostatically and baked on. Metalizing sprays molten metal onto a surface to build a protective layer. Electroplating deposits a metal layer on another metal object using electricity. Spray metal coating applies liquid or powder metal to create a real metal layer for functional or decorative purposes.

Which type of metal coating is best for design and architecture?

Liquid metal coating is the type specified for interior and exterior design, furniture, architecture and branding. It is best for these applications because it is genuine metal on the surface, it is compatible with wood, MDF, stone and composites, and it is available in bronze, brass, copper, tin, iron and more. Powder coating, metalizing and electroplating are chosen mainly for industrial protection or small components rather than for tactile, high end surfaces.

What surfaces can a liquid metal coating be applied to?

A liquid metal coating bonds to wood, MDF, stone, composites, plaster, concrete, glass, plastic, polyester and existing metal. Because it is applied as a thin coating rather than fixed as a panel, existing walls, furniture, doors and architectural elements can receive a genuine metal surface without structural modification or added weight loading.

How does a metal coating compare with solid sheet metal?

Both deliver a genuine metal surface. A VeroMetal® liquid metal coating weighs approximately 0.5 kg/m² and is applied at only 120 to 150 microns, so it is a fraction of the weight of solid sheet metal of comparable appearance. It follows curves, edges and detailed forms without joints, needs no sub-structure or fixings, and can be applied on-site or in a workshop to new or existing surfaces.

Which metals are available as a liquid metal coating?

VeroMetal® liquid metal coating is produced in Bronze, Copper, Brass, Gold, Zinc, Tin, Manganese, Iron and more, each available in multiple surface treatments and patina states. Base metals can also be mixed, so a finish can be tuned precisely to a design. Iron finishes are chosen for the living patina they develop through exposure.

How do I choose the right metal coating for my project?

Start from the surface, the substrate and the appearance you need. Industrial protection of large steel structures points to metalizing, small components point to electroplating, and coloured durable finishes on metal objects point to powder coating. A tactile, authentic real metal surface on furniture, walls, facades and interiors points to liquid metal coating.
