Definition

What Is A Metal Coating For Furniture?

A metal coating for furniture gives a piece the appearance, texture and ageing behaviour of real metal. VeroMetal® contains actual metal particles, applied at 120 to 150 microns to MDF, plywood and most existing furniture substrates. Any piece of furniture that can be primed can receive a genuine metal finish.

The result is a surface that looks, feels and ages like solid metal, at a fraction of the weight and cost of metal sheet fabrication. Because the coating is cold-workable, it is applied with a spray gun, roller or palette knife, the same tools used in standard finishing work. No specialist metalworking equipment, no factory processing and no heat treatment is required.

The Process

How Is VeroMetal Applied To Furniture?

VeroMetal® can be applied on-site by a certified applicator, which means existing furniture can be transformed in place without removal or replacement.

01

Mix

Real metal particles are combined with a cold-workable binder in the chosen metal, from bronze and copper to iron, manganese and zinc.

02

Apply

After surface preparation and priming, one or more coats are applied by spray gun, roller or palette knife at a combined thickness of 120 to 150 microns.

03

Cure and finish

Once cured, the surface is worked, sanded, polished, brushed or patinated, then sealed for maximum durability or left unsealed to develop natural oxidation over time.

Finishes

Which Metal Finish Is Right For Your Furniture?

VeroMetal® offers over 15 metal finishes for furniture coating. These are the finishes most frequently specified for furniture applications.

VeroMetal copper finish sample

Copper

A distinctive warm tone that develops rich natural patina. Popular in contemporary kitchen and bathroom furniture.

VeroMetal brass finish sample

Brass

A refined gold tone, in Brass and Yellow Brass, suited to luxury residential and hospitality furniture.

VeroMetal gold finish sample

Gold

The most decorative finish, for display furniture, frames and bespoke objects.

VeroMetal zinc finish sample

Zinc

A cool, architectural tone, used with Aluminium in contemporary and Scandinavian-influenced furniture design.

VeroMetal tin finish sample

The Principle

Real metal where solid metal cannot go. A cabinet front, a sculptural object in foam and a museum display case all carry genuine metal, at a fraction of the weight of sheet fabrication.

Comparison

Metal Coating For Furniture With VeroMetal vs Solid Sheet Metal

Both deliver a genuine metal surface. The difference is weight, freedom of form and where each can realistically be used on a piece of furniture.

Metal Coating For Furniture With VeroMetal

VeroMetal coating
  • Approximately 0.5 kg/m², applied at 120 to 150 microns.
  • Bonds to MDF, plywood, solid wood, fibreglass, foam, resin and existing metal.
  • Follows curved forms, sculptural objects and complex profiles without joints.
  • Applied on-site or in the workshop, on new furniture or existing pieces.
  • Real metal that can be sanded, polished, oxidised and patinated.

Solid Sheet Metal

Metal sheet fabrication
  • Many times heavier than a coating for a comparable surface.
  • Requires fabrication, fixings and a supporting furniture structure.
  • Curves and sculptural forms need specialist forming and welding.
  • Heavy panels are difficult on lightweight or existing furniture.
  • Real metal, but constrained by weight, cost and fabrication.

Substrates

Which Furniture Materials Can Receive A VeroMetal Coating?

VeroMetal® bonds to a wide range of furniture substrates. As a general rule, any furniture surface that can accept a primer coat can receive VeroMetal, including glass, stone, concrete and most painted or lacquered surfaces.

  • MDF and plywoodThe most common furniture substrate. Cabinet fronts, drawer faces and panel furniture are straightforward to coat and produce a consistently high-quality result.
  • Solid woodVeroMetal bonds to primed solid wood. Timber furniture, frames and architectural joinery receive a genuine metal finish without alteration to the underlying structure.
  • Fibreglass and GRPShaped and moulded components are well suited to VeroMetal, including curved forms, sculptural objects and complex-profile decorative pieces.
  • Foam, resin and existing metalRigid foam and resin carry a convincing, durable metal surface on lightweight objects. VeroMetal also bonds over existing metal furniture for a change of finish or patina without stripping or refabricating the piece.
Applications

Which Furniture Types Can Be Coated With VeroMetal?

VeroMetal® is used by interior designers, furniture makers and OEMs across a wide range of furniture applications. The Louvre Abu Dhabi specified VeroMetal for its museum display cabinets, surfaces where material authenticity, long-term durability and visual quality are non-negotiable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Metal Coating For Furniture: Common Questions

What is a metal coating for furniture?

A metal coating for furniture is a surface treatment that gives a furniture piece the appearance, texture and ageing behaviour of real metal. VeroMetal® is a liquid metal coating containing actual metal particles, bronze, copper, brass, zinc, iron and more. Applied at 120 to 150 microns to primed furniture surfaces, VeroMetal produces a genuine metal finish that can be polished, patinated and sealed.

Can VeroMetal be applied to existing furniture?

Yes. VeroMetal® bonds to most existing furniture surfaces including MDF, solid wood, painted finishes, fibreglass and metal. A certified applicator prepares the surface, applies a primer, and coats the piece with VeroMetal on-site. Existing furniture can be transformed without disassembly or replacement, making VeroMetal a practical choice for renovation and refurbishment projects.

Is VeroMetal durable enough for furniture in daily use?

Yes. VeroMetal® is an abrasion-resistant coating used in demanding environments including museum display cases at the Louvre Abu Dhabi and hospitality furniture in hotel interiors. A sealed VeroMetal furniture surface withstands everyday use and maintains its appearance with routine cleaning. An unsealed surface develops natural patina over time, which many designers specify as a deliberate design quality.

Can furniture manufacturers and OEMs use VeroMetal in production?

Yes. VeroMetal® is used by furniture manufacturers and OEMs as a production finishing system. The coating is compatible with standard workshop application processes and does not require specialist metalworking equipment or high-heat curing. VeroMetal provides full technical documentation and applicator training for manufacturers integrating VeroMetal into their production workflow.

How does VeroMetal compare to metal veneer or metal foil for furniture?

Metal veneer and foil products simulate the appearance of metal using a very thin surface layer bonded to a backing material. They contain little or no actual metal and do not develop authentic patina. VeroMetal® contains real metal particles and behaves like solid metal. It can be sanded, polished, oxidised and patinated using standard metalworking techniques. The result is a surface with genuine material depth that no foil or veneer can replicate.
